I am also continuing to explore the idea of painting as process and using this approach to show landscape painting as process made visible, rather than merely depicting a fixed moment in time. The artificial nature of the painted image makes it an ideal medium to express the ambiguities of scale in an environment devoid of reference points such as Antarctica or other empty landscapes, to extract the otherness in what initially seems commonplace. I have always had need for space and expanse and frequently use the device of atmospheric perspective express this. The progressive layering of tones is suggestive of a journey beyond the surface. Because my work does not slot easily into categories neither being traditional realism or engaging in modernist discourse there is no ready-made path to progress. Therefore time and space to experiment & explore ideas is really important to me.
