Antarctica: Forms

Images are below click here

After closely observing the patterns created by melting and refreezing of ice on glacier faces and on ice cliffs meeting the sea I became fascinated as to how the larger forms reflected the smaller units of which they were made, like the branching patterns of fractal geometry. Alternating distant and close up views explore this theme. When deprived of markers as to scale, ambiguities abound. Macro echoes micro and are often indistinguishable. The ambiguity of the painted image expresses this paradox. I have often found the label "realism" for this genre problematic. As a painter I actually exploit the unreality, the illusion, for expressive effect and to convey wider truths than the incidentals of a particular view at a specific time. The result is a summation of many incidents, determined by the process of painting itself. "Tomorrow will be the same but not as this is" comes to mind. The painted image is the trace etched on the minds eye made visible.
